Absinthe is a strong alcoholic beverage produced from herbal extracts with warmwood being the base. It is a green beverage with an unforgettable bitter taste and that is why it is drunk diluted with water and sweetened with sugar. Interesting information about Absinthe: Absinthe was considered elixir of life a long time before it could be ordered in cafés. When Madame de Caulauges, one of the leading figures of 17th cent. in France, became ill, she was prescribed medicines containing absinthe. When medicines calmed her stomach, she wrote to Madame de Saughe: “My little absinthe is the remedy for all diseases.” Hippocrates recommended absinthe to cure stomach ache and rheumatism. Ancient ansinth was different from the absinthe of Picasso. Formerly leaves of warmwood used to be soaked in wine or other beverage. Most likely the word absinthe was derived from the Greek “absinthion” which means undrinkable in translation (it is derived from its bitter taste). Pytagoras recommended warmwood soaked in wine for slaves before the childbirth. Hippocrates recommended it for anaemia and menstrual pains. Roman scholar, Pliny the Elder, let gladiators drink absinthe in order to remain them of the bitter side of each victory. He also recommended it as an elixir of youth and a mouthwash. Over the following centuries the wormwood is not a bitter medicine anymore. Independent distilleries started to produce absinthe from dried warmwood leaves, wine distillates, water and the multiple distillation. Tudor England produced so called hot beer popular mainly with the working class. The history of modern Absinthe was inveted in 1972 by a French doctor Pierr Ordinair who fled revolutionary France and settled down in a small Swiss village called Couved. When riding his horse, he discoverd the plant growing wild in the mountains in Valde – Travers region. Like most country doctors, he prepared his own remedies, and being acquainted with absinthe's use in ancient times, he began experimenting with it. Doctor Ordinaire's recipe probably contains the following herbs: warmood ( Artemisia absinthium ) anise ( Pimpinella anisium ) hyssop ( Hyssopus officinaliss ) ditanny ( Dictamnus albus ) sweet flag ( Acorus calamus ) and various amounts of coriander, veronica, chamomile, parsley and spinach… He used to pour his 68% beverage in a 16-liter container. When he died he left his secret recipe to sisters Couvet. Absinthe started to be the most popular in France. From 1875 to 1913, its consumption in France increased 15 times. It all went in the spirit of “La vie de bohéme“. This green beverage hour was on the top of social life. In London the consumption of absinthe increased rapidly in late 30’s. Absinthe influenced lives of various artists.
